    קַנְקָןI m. (קָנַן) 1) a cylindrical vessel let into the ground of the cellar (v. Sm. Ant. s. v. Dolium), in gen. wine- or oil-vessel. Ab. IV, 20 אל תסתכל בק׳וכ׳ look not at the vessel but at what it contains; יש ק׳ חדשוכ׳ many a new vessel is full of old wine (many a young man is a fine scholar) Koh. R. to VII, 28 ק׳ … מקַנְקַנּוֹוכ׳, v. infra. Gen. R. s. 85 נטלו ק׳ אחדוכ׳ they took one cask in the cellar ; החזירו את הק׳ למקומה (read: למקומו) put the cask back into its place. Y.Succ.I, 52b bot. כמשלח … וקַנְקַנָּהּ like one sending to his neighbor a cask of wine and the storage vessel with it (making a present of both); Gen. R. s. 13; Yalk. Ps. 882. Y.Bets. IV, beg. 62b מביאה על גב קנקנה he brings the load of wine in its original vessel (not bottle-wise); a. fr.Pl. קַנְקַנִּים, קַנְקַנִּין. Gen. R. s. 32 היוצר … בודק ק׳ מרועעיםוכ׳ the potter does not try (knock at) the defective vessels …, but he tries the sound (so God tries not the bad but the good men).
